Objets de valeur shows — through a series of photographs by Fabrice Gousset — raw wood and glass objects collected and hand-crafted by Martin Szekely in his studio in Normandy. Accompanied by an interview led by Constance Rubini, director of the Museum of Decorative Arts and Design in Bordeaux, this visual body of work presents objects that remain true to their constituent materials and the history that shaped them.
“It is from this raw material that I work. To me, these found pieces of wood are a treasure ; this compels me to keep them as close as possible to their original state — each with its own unique dimensions, shape, color, and species — and to avoid altering them beyond a certain point, lest their inherent power be lost. It is the volume of the wood, in its uniqueness, that dictates the process leading to the final result, rather than a drawing — which plays no part in this approach.” — Martin Szekely
Objets de valeur is the eighth book on Martin Szekely’s work published by B42. As part of a series launched in 2017, the publishing house has partnered with the French designer to present his work comprehensively through both text and images. Each volume focuses on a specific piece, series, or exhibition, offering an analysis of the designer’s output.
