Sammy Baloji was born in 1978 in Lubumbashi, in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) and lives and works in Brussels and Lubumbashi. He explores the cultural, architectural and industrial heritage of the Katanga region of Congo. In order to question official versions of Belgian colonial history, he has researched in various key archives – for example, the Royal Museum for Central Africa in Tervuren in Belgium. The history of art and documentary photography intertwine with that of colonialism. His series of photomontages and revisited albums confronts his historical research to the human and economic present condition. These various elements spark off each other and his series, such as “Congo Far West”, “Kolwezi”, “Mémoire”, resonate with meaning. Sammy Baloji is co-founder of the Picha Encounters, a regular international exhibition in Lubumbashi.
